My story about: Reading to Your Preschooler

Alicookie's story

August 11, 2007

I just love it! My little one snuggles in closer as I read happy stories, spooky stories, loving stories and goofy stories. There is such a special bonding that happens when I've plopped down on the couch or a comfy chair armed with several books for just "our time" together.

Well weeks turn into months and months into years of reading together and lo and behold, my son's love of books has turned into a thirst for his own collection.
Library books came home weekly and were returned promptly. However I do remember a time that a dog-eared, tattered library book became a permanent part of our collection due to a number of late library notices and ultimately having to purchase the book.

Sadly, his school work suffered. I hesitate to say it was because he focused more on the library books, but I was told by his teachers that he was scattered and not retaining what he had learned.

That summer, a speed reading course was offered through his school and I signed him up, to his chagrin. Summer school, plain and simple, was not fun.

However something wonderous happened. He jumped in to the course with both feet and excelled at the "need for speed" and competition with the other students. His retention and comprehension levels exceeded our expectations. He was now able to digest most any reading material and in greater volumes.

That summer experience has taken him through high school and college with stellar grades and with an even greater enjoyment for reading.

So if you always thought speed reading was for scholastic wiz kids, you're correct! Are you ready for your child to be one of them?
