My story about: Head Start

a-cmom's story

April 11, 2008

Hi, I just read your story about Head Start and your daugher, who is in second grade.
Another option that might exist for your son is a cooperative preschool program (if available in your area). In this case, the cost is greatly reduced because the parents agree to help out a few days each month. However, there would still be some expense for you. I have also heard of parents choosing to work for a private daycare/preschool, and in return their children get to attend for free. They also usually receive regular pay.

Also, if your daughter is in a school district that doesn't have really high test scores, she may be eligible to receive free tutoring. I believe the school also has to confirm that she needs extra help. My Mom used to tutor kids like this. As part of the 'No Child Left Behind' Act, if your daughter qualifies, she can receive free tutoring. In my Mom's case, she would actually drive to the student's home (after school- she also teaches learning disabled, and/or below grade level students full time). She was paid for her time and mileage from a tutoring club. The tutoring club got money from the government because of this federal act.
Here is a link that explains more about the 'No Child Left Behind Act'

I hope that this will help. It is frustrating to have limitations on your child's education because of money issues. I, too , am trying to figure out affordable preschool for my two sons, and debating whether to enroll my older son into kindergarten even though I know he isn't ready. Best of luck to you and your children.
