Both of my sons became avid little helprs in the kitchen at the age of two. Even if it meant just standing next to me on a chair, watching me stir a pot of something on the stove, they loved (and still love) being around the kitchen when food is being made.
One of my favorite activities is having them make fresh pizza...rolling out the dough, spreading the sauce, tossing on the cheese. And letting them pick out all the "fixings." They enjoy making the pizza together and feel like they've had control over their dinner...a little victory when they can eat pineapples and peaches on pizza for dinner! It sounds gross, but it's delicious.
I also like to let them chop miniature squash because it's something they can do with a dull knife.
In the end, even the most simple tasks get them excited because they feel like they are helping out.
