Maybe you're particularly gleeful because being pregnant means you can eat anything you want, and you can't wait to send your partner out to the store in the middle of the night for that romantic purchase of Twinkies (who needs pickles?) and ice cream.

Reality check: good nutrition is more important during your pregnancy than at any other time in your life. Indulgencies are okay, once in awhile, but it's essential that the bulk of your diet be made up of healthy whole foods.

A quick run through of the basics:

  • Eat a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, meat and beans, and dairy products daily
  • Avoid sugars, fatty foods, fried foods, soft drinks, and desserts (sorry, no Twinkies) as much as possible
  • Do not drink any alcoholic beverages as alcohol in large quantities has been shown to cause birth defects
  • Do not rely on a prenatal supplement to provide you with the nutrition you need

Other considerations:

  • Avoid packaged foods and snack foods whenever possible
  • Do not eat foods high in high fructose corn syrup or that contain partially hydrogenated oils
  • Do not eat foods with ingredients you can not read much less pronounce
  • Make sure to drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and constipation
  • Nutritious food like apple slices, green beans, bananas, cherry tomatoes make great "snacks" throughout the day
  • Avoid caffeine: switch to decaf coffee or herbal tea
