A pregnancy massage, also called a prenatal massage, is a great way to nurture your mind and your body. A massage can help relieve muscle cramping and the aches and pains that accompany most pregnancies. In addition, many pregnant women report that after a massage they feel much calmer and more relaxed.

That said, you may be disappointed to find out that your favorite day spa won't give you a massage once you are pregnant. Don't be discouraged. Pregnancy massage is growing in popularity and there are plenty of massage therapists who specialize in pregnant massage. If you prefer, there are also several books (like Elaine Stillerman's "Mother Massage: A Handbook for Relieving the Discomforts of Pregnancy") and videos (like Living Arts Massage Practice for Pregnancy) to show you and your partner how to do it yourselves.

Tips on finding a pregnancy massage therapist:

  • Look for a massage therapist who has been specially trained and is certified in pregnancy/prenatal massage
  • Try using massagetherapy.com's on-line referral service.
  • Before booking a massage, interview the therapist (for instance, ask how you will be positioned, how often she massages pregnant women, what kind of products she uses, etc). If you don't feel comfortable with the answers, look for someone else.
