Headaches are a common symptom of pregnancy, as are back pain, cramps, and more. So, can you take something for them or should you expect to spend most of your time in quiet, dark rooms until the baby's born? Here's a guide to some common pain medicine:

Acetaminophen (the active ingredient in Tylenol): This is safe to take while you're pregnant throughout your pregnancy.

Ibuprofen (Motrin and Advil): These is generally safe to take up until the third trimester, when it can interfere with labor.

Naproxen (Aleve): This is generally safe to take up until the third trimester, when it can interfere with labor.

Aspirin Not safe while you're pregnant, especially during the third trimester.

To be cautious, talk to your doctor or midwife before choosing your pain medication or stick with Tylenol.

For more information, see the American Family Physician's chart on safe pain medications during pregnancy.

See other ways of managing pain, like yoga and massage.

Safety Note:

Ibuprofen and Naproxen should not be used in pregnancy as chronic use is associated with oligohydramnios (low amniotic fluid) and constriction of the ductus arteriosis.
