Though the Food and Drug Administration considers MSG generally safe and scientists have found no proof that small doses hurt an unborn baby, some people will choose to skip it during pregnancy. One study conducted on mice suggested high doses of the flavor-enhancing salt may cross the placental barrier and cause damage during the baby's brain development. In other words, it remains a matter of debate and likely will be a personal decision for each mom.
At the very least, pregnant women should realize that MSG offers no nutritional benefit. It also has no flavor of its own, though it enhances flavors in other foods.
