What Experts Say*

Yes, you can scrub your toilet with your favorite bowl cleaner, and yes, you can mop your floors. (As long as you find it physically comfortable to do these things.) Everyday household cleaners are safe to use while pregnant, although commonsense caution says to make sure the room is well ventilated and wear gloves when handling cleaning supplies.

What to Avoid

While most things are safe to continue using, two things you should avoid are:

  • oven cleaners
  • dry cleaning solutions

These are too toxic while you're growing a baby, so send someone else to pick up the dry cleaning and let your oven sit dirty for the next nine months. (Don't worry, most people will be too interested in your bun in the oven to pay attention to the Kenmore's cleanliness.)

An Alternative Cleaning Product

If the smell of cleaning supplies makes your morning sickness worse or you still feel paranoid about breaking out your cleaning standbys, baking soda and vinegar make pretty good substitutes for just about everything you normally use. (Granted, you'll need to apply more elbow grease!)
