For the most part, pregnant women who suffer from depression can continue to take antidepressants; however, they should discuss with their doctor whether they should switch to a different type. Not all antidepressants are recommended for pregnant women.

When you have your first prenatal appointment you will discuss your mental health history with your doctor or midwife and together you can decide the best, most effective, and safest course of action for you during your pregnancy. Keep in mind that it may not match the medical decisions your sister's friend's co-worker's sister-in-law chose.

"No well-practiced doctor would prescribe antidepressants to a pregnant woman that were unsafe for the baby," says Stacy Quarty, author of "Frankly Pregnant." "If your doctor has prescribed antidepressants, he or she must feel that the benefits of the medication greatly outweigh the slim possibility of a drug risk."
