What Experts Say

Whatever your romantic life was like before, pregnancy is going to change it. Although you probably won't be playing rough and tumble in bed (if that's what you and your partner liked), you may be surprised by how loving you feel towards each other as you marvel in the idea that you are making a baby together.

Hormonal changes and increased blood flow cause some women to enjoy frequent sexual contact and actually feel more amorous but these same physical changes can cause other women to experience a marked decrease in libido.

Even if your wife is feeling less sexual, she will probably crave intimacy with you. Pregnancy is a good time for you to show appreciation for her and kindle your romantic life. Think flowers, surprise presents, and back rubs.

To have a good sex life during pregnancy there are some ground rules:

Communicate openly. Talk to her about what she likes and what she doesn't now that she's pregnant. To make these talks easier and take the pressure off, choose a neutral moment, like over breakfast or on a walk, instead of when you're already in bed.

Beware of her breasts. Many women find their breasts and nipples are highly sensitive during this time. This may mean being more gentle or simply keeping your hands off.

Maybe not missionary. As the fetus grows bigger, your wife may find it uncomfortable to lie on her back for long. Experiment with other positions in order to maximize enjoyment for both of you.
