What Experts Say

You have nine months to get used to your wife being pregnant and then -- boom -- there's a new baby in your life and a new process of emotional adjustment begins again. If the pregnancy was a surprise, the emotional adjustment to the idea that you will soon be a father may take longer than if you have been trying to get pregnant.

Pregnancy is an emotional time, for both your partner and for you, so don't be surprised if you have a range of feelings, from the sheer joy at the idea of a mini-me (and a smug feeling of being a stud) to fears about whether you will be a good father.

Here are some ways to help with your emotional transitions.

Show your sentimental emotions with your wife or partner. If you're feeling teary eyed or sentimental, James Barron, author of She's Having a Baby ... And I'm Having a Breakdown, recommends that you share those feelings with your wife. She will appreciate knowing that she's not the only one feeling overcome.

Share your negative feelings with your friends. Your spouse may not be the right person to air your more negative feelings about fatherhood. Talk to other expectant dads and more experienced fathers to help work through those emotions.

Read when you don't want to talk: Scott Kelby's The Book for Guys Who Don't Want Kids has both sympathy for and answers to every fear.
