Sensitive Smelling

The man sitting on the bus next to you has breath that smells like rotting meat, the cutting board at home stinks like moldering potatoes. Is the world infested? Ask your spouse and your friends and they'll all tell you that nothing has changed. The problem is not the world, it's your sensitive pregnant nose ferreting out unpleasantness. In fact, your sense of smell may be so acute that it may actually provoke you to vomit, especially in the first trimester (see morning sickness).

A more acute sense of smell, along with a missed period, tender breasts, and fatigue is one of the earliest signs of pregnancy. It may last throughout your pregnancy or it may go away after the first trimester.

If the smells are making your head spin, here's what you can do:

  • Breathe through your mouth as much as possible.
  • Avoid smelly places (like greasy kitchens and county fairs).
  • Eat small amounts of healthy food often. Chances are if you're feeling less nauseated, the smells won't bother you as much.
  • Get fresh air. The upside to having a sensitive nose is being able to enjoy the heightened smell of flowers, trees, and newly cut grass.
