Pregnancy Brain

Feeling distracted now that you're pregnant? This phenomenon has a name -- it's called "pregnancy brain," "mommy brain," or in some parts of the world, "porridge brain."

There may be an evolutionary reason for this: Now that you're pregnant, it makes sense that your No. 1 mental priority is your growing baby and that other, less important things will fall off your radar.

Although some researchers have speculated that pregnancy brain is caused by hormonal changes, Katherine Ellison, author of "The Mommy Brain: How Motherhood Makes Us Smarter," argues that the real reason you're having trouble concentrating is due to sleep deprivation and the sharp learning curve involved in becoming a new mother.

If you are feeling particularly scattered, here are some things you can do:

Cut yourself slack. Be aware that this is a particularly challenging time and forgive yourself.

Make sure to get enough sleep.

Post reminders of important tasks. Put them where you are sure to see them, call your answering machine and leave yourself a reminder message, ask your spouse or close friend to help you remember.

Rely on your partner to share the load. If you leave the grocery store with half the food you needed, have your spouse do the shopping next time.
