My story about: Choosing Store-Bought Milk

DanielleBette's story

September 16, 2007

We try to buy organic food whenever possible (it's easy now that we have a Whole Foods in our new town). I used to think it was b.s. but once I learned that organic food affected more than just the environment, I changed my mind. Since I was pregnant with our daughter, we have always made sure we drank organic milk.

In order to be considered USDA Organic, milk needs to come from cows that aren't given antibiotics (pretty much all cows are routinely given antibiotics to combat the illnesses they get from a corn-based diet), haven't been fed feed treated with pesticides, and have grazed in the pasture for a minimal amount of time (as I mentioned before, most cows only eat a corn-based feed).

Organic milk does cost more but if your kid drinks a lot of it, it can make a difference. It's the one food that you can give them that is most readily available organically. Even my local Stop & Shop and Shoprite carries organic milk, and many companies are offering it or at least hormone-free and antibiotic-free versions (which to me are the most important of the four requirements). I think even wholesale clubs like BJs and Costco offer it. And of course, Wal-mart recently jumped on the "organic" bandwagon so I bet you can buy it there too.

If your child is allergic to cow's milk, or just doesn't like it, you can also try milk from goats.
