Admit it: On some level, you loathe the idea of your child sucking away on a pacifier like Maggie Simpson. And what happens if she refuses to give it up? All you can picture is your baby, then toddler, then -- heaven forbid! -- preschooler running around with a binkie still firmly implanted between her lips.
However, some parents swear by pacifiers to calm a fussy baby and help her fall asleep. If you're one of them, or are considering giving your child a pacifier, here are some tips to keep in mind.
Pacifiers in a child's mouth look so cute -- up until a certain point. To make sure you don't get to that point, try to keep your baby from becoming a pacifier addict. Children understand more than we sometimes give them credit for. If you explain to your child the times it is acceptable to use a pacifier -- i.e., bedtime, naptime -- they will get it. As they get older, you can wean them from the pacifier in the same way. As for sleeping with a pacifier, you might find that it's much easier to get them off the pacifier than the bottle at night so enjoy that.
