Sleeping With a Pacifier

What Experts Say

Admit it: On some level, you loathe the idea of your child sucking away on a pacifier like Maggie Simpson. And what happens if she refuses to give it up? How can I make sure that my child doesn't get addicted to the pacifier?

Pacifiers in a child's mouth look so cute -- up until a certain point. To make sure you don't get to that point, try to keep your baby from becoming a pacifier addict. Children understand more than we sometimes give them credit for. If you explain to your child the times it is acceptable to use a pacifier -- i.e., bedtime, naptime -- they will get it. As they get older, you can wean them from the pacifier in the same way. As for sleeping with a pacifier, you might find that it's much easier to get them off the pacifier than the bottle at night so enjoy that.

I have heard that children that suck on pacifiers (or their thumbs) change the way their teeth sit...is there validity to this? (ie; their front teeth stick out)
