In response to RayLuis's sad tale of the wife who goes to sleep with their son each night...Parents need to be comfortable that a) they are in charge, not the kid, b) kids can cry and protest any change in routine, but they will adapt, c) it is a necessary skill to teach your son to fall asleep independently, why not start now?
There are many wonderful strategies for breaking this cycle, many of which gradually withdraw the parents' presence in the child's room so that there are fewer tears and tantrums. Ultimately, your wife should do this both you and for your son...and for HER.
