Our first child,a beautiful baby girl (Baby M) was about six-months old. We were exhausted from sleep deprivation and the battle began. How to get her to sleep thru the night?
We decided to let her "cry-it-out". We talked about our plan,we agreed it was the best thing and we were ready for the big night. We picked a Friday. "Baby M" went to bed around 8PM as usual, she woke up for her normal 11PM feeding and then we all went to bed. At 2AM she started crying, we both woke up at the same time and laid in bed listening quietly for a few minutes. "Are you awake? " I asked? "Of course I'm awake you idiot, do you think I'm deaf?" my wife replied. I asked, Do you think she's ok? Should I go check on her?" "No, lets wait a few minutes?. Baby M cried louder seeming to think we did not hear her bellows. After an eternity(about five minutes), my wife said "I am going to see if she is ok", I lay in bed listening, I hear the cries stop, a soothing voice and all is quiet, for about 30 seconds. My spouse crawls back into bed and the noise starts again louder than before. Two minutes later, "I'll check her" I say. She is laying on her back, yelling loudly. She sees me and puts out her arms, I turn her over, rub her back and tell sing her a song, the crying stops. The minute I leave the room, the noise starts again.
We lasted about 30 minutes before breaking down and bringing her into our room for another feeding.
Saturday night we determined to do a better job. For the first hour we checked her every ten minutes, rubbing her back, telling her it was ok, everything but picking her up out of the crib. The crying was constant, we lay in bed sweating from the stress and worry. Are we bad parents? The Second hour we checked only twice, her crying had slowed. By the third hour we finally fell asleep. In the morning when we checked on baby M, she was sound asleep, SITTING UP in her bed.
The next night she cried for about 30 minutes and has slept all night ever since.
