Microwaving Bottles

Help

What Experts Say

Even though it's tempting to stick a bottle in the microwave when your baby's crying for her milk right now, don't do it.

For one, microwaves don't heat evenly, which means that despite those few drops of formula passing the wrist-test, there could still be hot spots that can burn your baby's mouth.

Microwaving the bottle could also cause potentially harmful toxins to leach from the plastic into the formula, says Ivy Faske, M.D., a pediatrician and member of the American Academy of Pediatrics' Communication Committee . The quality of plastic used for bottles varies widely, and not all bottles are even microwave safe, so be sure to check the packaging.

How to Heat Up Formula

You can warm the bottle by running it under hot water from the tap.

Even better, fill a coffee mug half-way with water and zap it in the microwave for about 30 seconds until it's hot (but not boiling). Then warm the milk by putting the bottle in the hot water for a minute.

Try Room-Temperature Formula

See if your baby will warm up to the idea of sipping her formula at room temperature.

According to Dr. Faske , it's not necessary to warm up formula at all.

"Consider that a lot of babies are given room-temperature formula at the hospital and they're totally fine with it," she says.
