After saying no to all drinking during pregnancy, a new mom often looks forward to sharing a glass of wine during dinner with her partner. But how much alcohol is safe if you're breastfeeding?
Light or occasional drinking is considered safe.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs, nursing mothers can drink alcohol in moderation. Occasional or light drinking, of one or less drinks a day, has not been found to be harmful to the nursing baby....
Of course you don't want to drink a ton and then nurse your baby. That's bad for many reasons: your own dehydration, the passing of alcohol to your infant to name a couple.
Rumor has it that beer (in moderation) can improve milk supply.
There really is no need to pump and dump. The alcohol that is in your milk is removed from your milk as fast as it is from your blood. Pumping will only replace the milk with more milk that has the same alcohol content. If you drink more than one or two drinks, you'll want to wait an hour or two before breastfeeding.
The only time pumping and dumping may be needed is if you are engorged and need to pump off some of the excess milk for your comfort. In that case, if you have recently been drinking, it is best to discard that pumped milk.
