Drinking to Increase Milk Supply

My story about: Breastfeeding and Alcohol

BuckeyeChristy's story

September 05, 2007

When my second daughter was born, my milk supply was very low at first. Pumping between feedings wasn't helping, so I checked with my pediatrician. She recommended that I take the herbal supplement fenugreek, but she also advised me to drink one dark beer a day. Apparently dark beer can help with increasing milk supply.

I've never liked beer, but I followed her advice, and within two weeks I had a noticably larger supply of milk, and we were able to stop supplementing with formula entirely. I haven't needed to drink it again, thank goodness - I really prefer a glass of wine to a beer!
