Your Baby's First Six Weeks

You're home with your new baby ... now what do you do? It's normal to feel overwhelmed by this awesome responsibility, but sit down and relax.

The authors of "Nursing Your Baby," Karen Pryor and Gale Pryor, advocate a "40-day rule" of taking it easy and adjusting to your new role. "Perhaps 40 days of 'doing nothing' seems a ridiculously long time to you, or an unattainable luxury. But there are many generations of experience behind that widespread tradition." The authors also point out that this period of rest is especially important for moms who will soon be returning to the work force. "If you overdo now, you may find yourself paying for it later, with weeks, even months of fatigue that could have been mitigated by a little more early rest."...

Is there anyone I can contact if I have questions about breastfeeding?

One of the best resources for breast feeding moms out there is La Leche League. They can be found at www.lalecheleague.org. If you are planning on breastfeeding, it is a good idea to contact them before and take a class or let them answer any questions you might have. If your baby is born and you want a positive, caring and helpful environment to learn more about breastfeeding, contact your nearest La Leche League organization in your community or a breastfeeding group of moms who can be there to support you. Breastfeeding is a wonderful gift you can give to your child and it's a great bonding time especially in those first days.

Should I try to get my newborn on a set feeding schedule?

QueenofSpainBlog: Don't be afraid of frequent feedings. Breastmilk digests quickly AND your baby has a need to suck, even if not for milk. LET THE BABY SUCK! Those first few weeks don't try to get on a "schedule"-your baby (like both of mine) maybe on and off the breast 30 times in an hour and that is OK. Feeding or sucking for comfort every 5 minutes is TOTALLY NORMAL. Let your child dictate when he/she wants to suck for those first, early weeks. You are establishing the latch-on and you are letting your baby do what comes naturally.
