My story about: Engorgement

MandaJuice's story

July 12, 2007

After the birth of my son, my breasts got so engorged that none of my bras fit and I had to go to the lactation center at our hospital to get fitted for a nursing bra - a 42G. I looked like an 18 year old stripper! It was ridiculous.

The pain was unbearable and worse, my breasts were so swollen that my son couldn't latch on properly. My nipples were literally swollen flat.

Only two things seemed to help:

1) I had to wear breast shells in my bra at all times. These are sold at Target by Medela and help force flat nipples to stick out more so the baby can latch.

2) I had to use HEAT to get my milk to let down before every nursing session. I would apply a hot wet wash cloth or even better, a newborn diaper filled with the hottest water I could stand for about five minutes before nursing on each breast.

I also had to nurse the baby around the clock until he was able to relieve my engorgement. When my second baby was born, I basically employed the same strategies and it worked again but with far fewer tears on my behalf.
