"Knowledge is power," says Dr. Steven Willi, director of the Diabetes Center for Children at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
"Realizing you're not the only family out there dealing with type 1 is a huge benefit and helps provide an optimistic outlook."
The following organizations can provide information and connections to other families that have a child with type 1 diabetes:
- American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org)
- Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International (jdrf.org)
- Children with Diabetes (childrenwithdiabetes.com)
- Diabetes Research Foundation (diabetesresearch.org)
There may also be support groups at your nearest children's hospital. Also, ask the members of your diabetes care team about summer camps for children with diabetes. These offer parents a safe place for their kids with medical staff and give kids the chance to socialize with other kids who have type 1 diabetes.
