Holiday Escapes for the Family

Ways To Slow Down And Reflect With Your Family During The Holidays

  • Have a "Sabbath" in every day. This isn't a religious Sabbath. Light a candle, have a cup of tea and just be for five minutes.
  • Take a bubble bath. Put relaxing aroma oils in the bath.
  • Reflect on enjoyable memories.
  • Reflect on your successes.
  • Watch the clouds.
  • Pet an animal.
  • Have date night.
  • Enjoy a glass of cool water.
  • Stay in the moment even for small things like washing your hands. Feel the water, the soap, the towel. This stops your mind and slows you down.
  • Get into nature. Look at the clouds, go to the park, woods or forest, arrange flowers, take photos of nature.
  • Call a friend.
  • Watch snowflakes or rain fall.
  • Stop. Listen for five sounds. Look for five sites. Smell five different smells. Feel five different textures. This slows you down, gets your mind off of things and reveals the abundance all around you.
  • Say or read a spiritual prayer or poem.
  • Watch a fire in the fireplace.
  • Get a massage.
  • Play a card or board game.
  • If you play a musical instrument, dust it off and play for five minutes.
  • Dance in your kitchen.
  • Daydream.
  • Sing. Sing with your family. Sing along to holiday CDs.
  • Get a manicure or pedicure.
  • Buy a magazine that you usually read standing in line at the grocery. Set aside a delicious time to hunker down and read it cover to cover.
  • Share hugs with someone you love.
  • Thank your service providers in person – the mailperson, garbage collector, etc. They'll appreciate it, and you'll feel great.
  • Go to a funny movie.
  • Stop to realize that these moments will never come again.
