Leader of the Pack
Is there a more liberating developmental milestone than when your child graduates from diaper bag to backpack? Our kids don't merely agree to lug their own load, they insist on it.
"I don't want you to carry my stuff," 6-year-old Lila tells her mom, "because then you can't hold my hand." Aww.
Then there's Levi, 4 years old and far less sentimental. "If I didn't have a backpack I couldn't go to school," he insists. "I'd only have a lunch box and I'd have to put everything in my lunch box and it wouldn't all fit."
