What are the special needs of gifted students?
It is important to determine a gifted child's needs at an
early age in order for parents, schools and the community to
adequately support these students. Some common needs of gifted
students are:
- Challenge - Gifted children need material that is commensurate with their abilities in order to give them an appropriately challenging education.
- Guidance - Gifted children need to learn organization, planning, time and resource management, and other skills to make effective use of their intellectual abilities.
- Acceptance of who they are - Gifted children may find it difficult to be accepted for who they are. Provide them with opportunities to be with their intellectual peers.
- Most importantly, enjoy your child! Your life together will be a great adventure if you value your child for what he/she offers. As parents, we are truly blessed to be so intimately involved with such marvelous people, our children.
