Tip 5: Get involved only as a last resort
Wise parents intervene on behalf of their children only when it is clear the teacher is so incompetent or negative that even the best behaved and most responsible student would find it impossible to adapt. Fortunately, these types of educators are rare.

When we follow these tips, we give our kids the gift of knowing they can succeed around all different types of people.

Unfortunately, some parents steal this wonderful opportunity by trying to make sure their children's teachers are "perfect." Sadly, as adults, many of these children spend their lives being unhappy because other people are "mean" or "unfair."

Don't fall into this trap! Use these Love and Logic tips, and give your kids the responsibility and self-confidence they deserve.

I think this article should have been written in a manor that helps with identifying what your child means when they say "My teacher is mean". I am a Daycare provider, I run a licensed daycare out of my home. Yes you have to be firm with a child but in some cases teachers are down right disrespectful & MEAN... And as for someone to sit in on a class to observe the teacher??? This is ridiculous! If a teacher is in fact mean to your child they arent going to do it in front of an adult. I am currently going through this with my child with her first grade teacher. I have witnessed her teacher treating her like she is stupid & ignoring her! Once the teacher seen me she was horrified! BUSTED! I brought it to the attention of the principal & schoolboard & nothing has been done. Children should feel safe to come to their teacher with a problem, even if it's a firm teacher. If the teacher is abusing there powers their position should be terminated and teaching license removed...

The author only attempted to understand the problem and assumed much. When a teacher is mean on a day to day basis, this can cause severe repercussions to the child's health and well being. They may not be mean to everyone, just their child. A real answer would be to seek the school's psychologist help to determine what exactly is going on in the situation and whether or not the child's best interest is to stay or be moved to another teacher. Don't assume all teachers are perfect, they simply are not. As a parent, your primary role is to protect your child and see that the child is growing in the best possible environment, not being labeled, or pushed around while you are not their to see it. You have to do your job, no one else will love your child like you.

Thank you for such a great article. I hope a lot of parents read this. As a Kindergarten teacher, I have many parents who jump to conclusions when their child comes home saying comments such as this. Always talk to your child's teacher to hear his/her side of the story before you let accusations fly. More often than not the child was making a bad choice and deserved the discipline that occured. I agree with the above comment. I also am firm and have very high expectations.
