What are the special needs of gifted students?
It is important to determine a gifted child's needs at an early
age in order for parents, schools and the community to adequately
support these students. Some common needs of gifted students
are:
Challenge: Gifted children need material that is commensurate with their abilities in order to give them an appropriately challenging education.
Guidance: Gifted children need to learn organization, planning, time and resource management, and other skills to make effective use of their intellectual abilities.
Acceptance of who they are: Gifted children may find it difficult to be accepted for who they are. Provide them with opportunities to be with their intellectual peers.
Most importantly, enjoy your child! Your life together will be a great adventure if you value your child for what he/she offers. As parents, we are truly blessed to be so intimately involved with such marvelous people, our children.
