I still can't believe summer is pretty much over. Even more unbelievable is that my baby, my son who it seems took his first steps just a few months ago, is starting KINDERGARTEN next month.
So, in addition to coming to terms with the fact that my boys are growing up so much faster than I want them to (ok, I know it's just kindergarten, but it's a big deal for me!), I have to shop for everything back to school and prepare him (and myself!) for his new school, new friends and new teachers.
To help us get ready, I consulted those in the know: my friends who have already been through it. Here's a round-up of the best DOs and DON'Ts I got from my trusted pals:
- DO try to arrange a visit of the new school with your child before her first day so you both can be familiar with the new surroundings.
- DON'T skimp on any transitional periods the school recommends. My son's preschool requested a full week of parent participation for a smooth separation. Though it may seem inconvenient to rearrange work schedules or other commitments, spending the time will ensure your child's comfort once you do leave.
- DO plan a get together with other families before school starts. Get a class contact list from the school and invite the parents and kids over for a play date. My friend, Laurie, invited new classmates to her daughter's birthday party (which happened to fall two weeks before the first day of kindergarten) -- it presented the perfect opportunity for the parents to get to know one another and for the kids to get to know each other before the big day.
- DON'T risk meltdowns over misplaced belongings -- label everything from his clothing and shoes to important supplies. We love Stuck on You's cute, colorful and durable custom labels and hangtags.
- DO sneak "Hi", "Have a great day", and "I love you" notes in with her lunch for unexpected surprises. And...make sure lunch stays cool while looking hot! We love Thermos' FUNtainer line of lunchboxes, jars and drink bottles.
- DON'T go overboard with the school supplies. Stick to the essentials or work off of basic supply lists. Keeping it to a minimum doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style. Take advantage of modern, fun notebooks (I snagged a few for my office, too), cute cases and accessories.
- DO relax -- any tension or anxiety you're feeling will transfer to your child. Have fun with the experience and take lots of photos!
