Bring Back the Wurlitzer
By taking your music collection digital, you can keep everything at your fingertips. Now you can jump from ABBA's Number Ones over to The Best of Warren Zevon without switching discs. Best of all, by storing all of your music on your secondary computer, your primary computer will have that much more memory allowing you to use additional programs or applications. Now, let's get to it:
- If you haven't already, convert your CD library to digital music files. A number of programs (including Yahoo! Music Jukebox, Apple's iTunes and Windows Media Player) can automate the process.
- Organize your collection and create playlists: Think mix-tapes but in glorious digital sound! Whether organized by year, artist, theme or something else, playlists will let you quickly and easily enjoy your collection.
- Connect your music server to your home stereo:
-
- Wired: If your computer is in the same room, you can run a wire from your sound card to your stereo to quickly connect.
- Wireless: If you want to keep it wireless, devices such as the Logitech Squeezebox, Apple Airport Express or the Roku Soundbridge fit the bill.
Now that you have two working computers, you should be able to do homework and make music mixes at the same time. Remember, technology advances every day but that doesn't mean the older versions are useless. There are always ways to continue to use what you already have.
