Pow! Using Comic Books to Get Kids Reading
Great stuff - it's so importantthe kids find their own path to loving to read. It lays the foundation for a lifetime of reading and in turn learning. The Library of Congress - which currently has a campaign promoting childhood literacy - totally encourages such alternative avenues to getting kids reading. Check out their web site at www.loc.gov/literacy/storybook/flash

Don't forget that great reading material for kids can come out of the comics section of the Sunday paper too. Many a Sunday morning during my early childhood was spent poring over the paper. Garfield and Peanuts are a great motivator.

Dad-of-the-Future - That's an interesting concern. You might find the answers you're looking for here: http://family.go.com/entertainment/article-62639-Comic-Books-for-Girls-t/ The article names some comic book series that may appeal specifically to girls.

When I was a child, my friends and I were really into comic books. However, none of the girls had any interest in them. As an adult I only know of one young lady, two years younger than me, who enjoys them.
I see how kids can get motivated by comic books, but is there a way to create the same motivation for those children who don't read comics, particularly girls?

If your child likes comic book stories, I highly recommend the picture book Perfect Man by Troy Wilson. It's a wonderful story with great illustrations by Dean Griffiths. Very funny, very heartwarming. A must read!

My mom was always great at encouraging reading and never thwarting my brother or me if we picked up something less than high-minded. I remember picking up Misty comics at the bookstore and an Archie Double Digest every now and then at the check-out counter. I followed that up with devouring Mad magazine and got into series' books, too. To this day, reading -- both 'Capital L' literature and supposed 'lowbrow' fare -- remains my favorite hobby, pasttime, whatever and I have no shame at stopping at my local comic shop to feed the habit with some comics series I've only recently discovered....

I used to buy comics for my boy. I had no idea it would turn into a lifelong hobby for him.

I used "Bone" to help the kids read and gain an appreciation of the art form!
