Fun and Free Ways to Improve Reading Skills

Message Mania
Make print meaningful! Using paper, chalkboard or whiteboard, frequently record little notes, messages, reminders, etc. back and forth to your child.
Bake Up a Storm
Encourage your child to practice reading skills by following a recipe to make something yummy!
Be a Comic
With your child, read a comic book as a play, with each of you taking on a role or two. Change your voice for each character.
Partner Tales
On paper, write a few sentences to begin an exciting story. Then, pass it to your child for her/him to carefully read what you've written, and then add a few more sentences to continue the story. Then, it's your turn again, and so on, until the story is finished. Read it together.
Crazy Quips
On 20 strips of paper, record five names (i.e. George Washington), five action words (i.e. burped), five places (i.e. on the moon), and five time periods (i.e. last night). Then, have your child take a strip from each group to build crazy sentences.
Context Clues
Cover every fifth word in a story. (Post-It Notes work well.) Then, have your child read the story, using context clues to predict what the blank words might say.
Time for Tapes
Have your child read a favorite story on tape, using lots of expression. Ring a bell when it is time to turn the page. Encourage him/her to listen to the tape often, while following along in the book.
Terrific Tunes
Have your child sing favorite songs, while following along in the songbook.
