He Made, She Made: City Chic Locker Door Decor
When I was in middle school, my locker partner and I decorated our locker like a cool city apartment. We even included a faux door at the back as a secret entrance to the city and beyond. (Sometimes, we'd even send out invitations to friends, telling them to stop by for a visit. It was hilarious!) So, using the new Disney Channel show "Shake It Up" as inspiration, kids can make a cool Chicago apartment with a view of the city's amazing skyline out the window. (Or,they can architect a city of their very own to spy through their cool new locker digs!)
You'll need:
- Wire furniture and tables (fashioned with brightly colored, large-gauge, easily bendable wire)
- Black cardstock
- Assorted cardstock
- Plastic wrap or cellophane – tinted blue or clear
- One-quarter inch black tape
- Cardboard
- Pipe cleaners
Draw a cityscape on cardstock. Add windows to the buildings, and if it's nighttime in your city, paint some windows yellow, like the lights are on.
Place the cityscape on the back wall of the locker, then add either sky blue or clear plastic in front of it, to form the windows of your apartment. Fashion the window frames for your apartment from cardstock and glue these over the clear material, so it's like you are inside your apartment, taking in your view.
Shake It Up is set in Chicago, so you might make the walls of your apartment exposed brick if you're going for a Windy City vibe. Or, maybe your kid would like a spacious artist's loft, or an apartment decked out with funky wallpaper! Ask them what their dream apartment would look like and what would be inside it.
If your locker has a shelf, this can form one of your apartment's "floors." If not, cut a piece of cardboard one-eighth of an inch bigger then the width of your locker and wedge inside. Adorn the floors with furniture cut from cardstock or fashioned from bendable wire. Depending on how roomy your locker is, you can add a second shelf to form a rooftop deck, complete with mini potted plants, or maybe even a flowering tree.
Once you're all moved in, create invitations for friends to a locker housewarming party!

Getting the materials for this project is a snap, and Courtney is great at explaining how to get creative with them. Can't wait to try it with my kids!
