If you're like a lot of Seattle parents, you're pulling your hair out right now because you didn't act quickly enough to nab tickets to the premier Baby Loves Disco event a few weeks ago. The New Year's Eve party and February events are sold out, too. Which is I why I'm telling you now to get your tickets quick for the March shindig, which is happening on St. Patrick's Day from 1-4pm.
What the heck am I talking about? Nothing short of sheer genius. That's the best way I can think of to describe those Baby Loves Disco folks. The concept is so fun, so timely, so perfect that I'm deeply sorry I didn't think of it first. Here's the dealio: you take one hip and happening nightclub (in Seattle it's Chop Suey on Capitol Hill) and open it up on a Saturday afternoon as a venue for a kid-friendly dance party that keeps mom and dad shaking their groove things, too. They've thought of everything from diaper changing stations to bubble machines to places for the kids to chill out and read a book or play with a puzzle if they need a break. The music is supplied by a local DJ and only folks that have learned how to walk need to pay to get in. It's just twelve bucks for them and includes snacks. Only adults accompanied by a kid can get in, so grab your favorite little one (who's gotta be between six months and seven years) and get ready to start shaking it.
You can gain entry to all the fun by going to the Baby Loves Disco Seattle website http://www.babylovesdisco.com/locations/seattle and clicking on the ticket link. The process is rather cumbersome since once you get to the ticketing portal the events are organized chronologically instead of by location so you have to scroll down through a lot stuff in other cities to get to the party you want to buy tickets for, but it's a small complaint for what seems like an otherwise wonderful setup.
When so much entertainment for kids is pre-packaged, commercialized, and designed to sell us ever more stuff, I love it that Baby Loves Disco arose organically from a frustrated mom's desire to provide a fun atmosphere for city kids and their parents to get some exercise and bond underneath the mirror ball. Hope to see you at Chop Suey in March. I'll be the one in the white John Travolta suit.
