The thing about finishing a good book, is you wish you could keep on reading. Children especially are prone to this problem. Particularly any time after 7 p.m.
Problem solved, with this fantastic children's book series. It's called "Good Night Our World." Our American cities are featured in each of these delightfully written and illustrated board books. Dennis, Mass.-based Adam Gamble is the enchanting author behind all of these stories, which begin with a good morning, highlight the sights and sounds which make a particular city unique, and end with a gentle good night. Perfect for bedtime.
Given that this national author lives among us, it follows that his locally inspired books in particular do such a poignant job of depicting the feel of some of the places that make our home unique. As such, Boston-area moms should take special note of "Good Night Boston" and "Good Night Cape Cod." In "Good Night Boston," we start our day at the Boston Harbor, we cheer on Boston Marathon runners, we reminisce about our great sports teams. Boston is also proud of its students and museums; these are lovingly featured too.
Kids learn about wildlife and other nuances specific to particular places. The cranberry bogs are featured in "Good Night Cape Cod." In "Good Night Maine," we revere our blueberries, and later on, we sweetly wish the puffins and the seals good night. In New York City, we greet a hot-dog stand.
What a great way to reminisce about places your kids call home, or your favorite summer vacation spots. Learn too about other cities your family might like to one day visit, like San Francisco, Chicago, or Philadelphia.
As for the child who wants to keep on reading (and not go to bed), there's good news. Two new locally inspired books from Adam Gamble are due out in May 2007, and can be pre-ordered now on Amazon.com: "Good Night Nantucket," and "Good Night Martha's Vineyard."
