Saturday, January 20 Fernbank Museum premiered their new
permanent exhibit, Reflections of Culture. From pearls to
tattoos this exhibit shows how various cultures use personal
adornment as an expression of cultural identity.
This exhibit gives museum visitors a better understanding
of cultural diversity and how people use personal ornamentation
to communicate social, political and economic information about
themselves and the societies in which they live.
Artifacts are placed alongside captivating photographs,
which provide a context for how the objects are worn, by whom
and why. Educational interactives throughout the gallery allow
visitors to further explore how personal adornment is used to
express culture.
"In this exhibition we have paired unfamiliar, ethnographic items from around the world with examples that are more familiar to our visitors to bring that message home. So many cultural exhibitions focus on a particular culture or time period, but this exhibit spans the globe and allows visitors to learn more about their own culture at the same time recognizing similarities between many cultures," said curator Dr. Bobbi Hohmann.
Opening day activities included a scavenger hunt, arts and craft activities for the children, story telling and dance performances from Clarkston High School, and Fong Dance Ensemble. In addition to the exhibit, the Fernbank's IMAX theatre premiered Hurricane on the Bayou, a toe-tapping, jazz-fueled tour of New Orleans and the Louisiana bayou which explores the region's unique culture, coastal wetlands and wildlife.
Fernbanks next exhibit, Lizards & Snakes: Alive!, opens
February 10.
Interactive stations give visitors the opportunity to
come face to face with more than 60 live animals showcased in
re-created habitats, complete with ponds, tree limbs, rock
ledges, and live plants.
Featured animals include everything from a four-inch
tropical girdled lizard to a fifteen-foot Burmese python, and
represent 27 species from around the world.
There will also be an interactive center for children with hands-on activities including touchable skin casts, puzzles, books and more. On select days and times, Fernbank educators will present live animal encounters to provide an up close look at an amazing lizard or snake and answer visitor's questions.
