Our one-year old, Jack, came down with a cold this past Friday -- which I inevitably knew, meant it was just a matter of time before it hit the rest of us. As predicted, by Saturday evening, Jaden (our three-year old), Chris (my husband) and I were congested and coughing.

In our household, when we all get sick, it's up to me to hold down the fort...regardless of how crappy I feel. My typically helpful husband becomes a whiny, miserable wreck. He made himself a pot of tea and retreated to the bedroom.

With one whiny boy down for the count, I now had to deal with the other two if I was going to get any rest. Unfortunately, my kids don't do well with traditional cold medicines -- within minutes of taking Triaminic, PediaCare or Tylenol, they become whirling maniacs, running around leaving a trail of snot behind them until they crash into screaming fits.

Luckily, I had recently been sent some alternative remedies to test out, so I wasted no time.

First up: The kids got a couple of Hylands C-Plus Cold Tablets , a spoon of their Cough Syrup with Honey, followed by a Kidz-Eeze (by Cold-Eeze) zinc pop.

Jaden started to protest the syrup, but the lure of the lollipop put an end to all of that.

And then, to my delight, we all passed out for a nice, long nap. From which we emerged feeling much better. We kept the routine up through Sunday and by Monday, our colds had practically disappeared.

So, my advice -- don't walk, run to the store while you're healthy to stock up on these miracle workers. Now, if only there was a quick cure for whiny husbands.
