What I actually found interesting is that in over half of the cases in infants, the babies actually got it from their parents or their primary caregivers. All of us get this vaccine when were younger but it wears off. This campaign tells new parents to get the booster to protect their babies. Shane and I got the shot once River was born. Adults can walk around for months with whooping cough and its no big deal. Its just this crazy cold they cant get rid of. But infants can die from it. The only deaths from pertussis are in infants because they stop breathing when they are wheezing so much.
Besides this philanthropic endeavor, whats keeping you busy work-wise?
Right now, the last film I did, August Rush is coming out at Thanksgiving time so Ill be doing a lot of press and premiere type stuff. Its a really great family movie. Its fitting that Im doing all this mom stuff right now because its a great movie for the whole family to go to. Its really romantic and it takes place in New York City. Its all about magic and finding your familyits really beautiful. Im also reading new scripts all the time. I havent officially taken one yet, but Im getting closer. Really, Im just taking care of River, thats my main job!
How can you help prevent pertussis?
When you get your 10-year tetanus booster, ask for the TDAP, which adds a vaccination for pertussis. If you are in the process of trying to have a baby, you can get the sho beforehand, or you may get vaccinated a couple weeks after giving birth. Ask your doctor for more information.
And dont forget to check out Keri's movie "August Rush," also starting Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Freddie Highmore (the adorable kid from Finding Neverland). It opens on November 21st nationwide.
