Lolita: What do you want to teach your children?
Michele: I try every day to teach my children to be kind
and courageous and compassionate and curious. I want them to
believe in themselves and I want them to understand the
importance of helping others.
I also hope to teach them how to roll a strike, hit a
mean backhand, grow their own herbs, keep score at summer
baseball games, make a mean crab cake (their Dad is from
Baltimore), and ice fish (Mom's from Minnesota).
Lolita: What's your favorite family activity?
Michele: The two weeks we spend every summer in Martha's
Vineyard. Our extended family spends time together and we laugh
and play games late into the night and watch old movies and
make memories.
Lolita: Who do you admire most?
Michele: My mother. She is an amazing woman. Smart.
Funny. Spirited and so very strong. And my best pal, Gwen Ifill
-- talk about someone who knows how to speak truth to power.
Lolita: What is your greatest achievement?
Michele: My two amazing children, Aja and Norris.
Definitely my best productions.
Lolita: What product(s) can't you live without?
Michele: Good moisturizer. My iPod. GladWare. I cook for
the entire week on most Sundays. I usually make a killer entree
for Sunday supper, and then for later in the week I also make a
soup or stew, a sauce or marinade for pasta, chicken or fish,
veggies for saute or stir fry, and some sort of protein in a
pan. Something like Chicken Marbella, pork loin or short ribs
where the flavor actually improves if it bathes in the sauce
for a day or two. It allows me to control what my family eats,
avoid a reliance on takeout, and indulge my hidden desire to be
a full-time foodie. In my family, we say "I Love You" through
food.
Lolita: What do you do when you're feeling selfish?
Michele: Sneak away to get a pedicure or read cookbooks
and make up fantasy menus.
Lolita: What's keeping you busy these days?
Michele: I have a six and a seven year old. What's NOT
keeping me busy these days!
