Create Your Own Digital Imaging Studio

family photos

With the latest digital imaging technology, you can turn your home or home office into a professional photography studio. You don't need large equipment, a darkroom, or even the local photo processor to create and print quality photographs or brochures. In fact, the following checklist will provide all that you need to take, edit, print, publish, and electronically share digital photographs. You can do it all from your desktop

Start With a Digital Camera
The centerpiece of a digital imaging studio is of course a digital camera. The most important feature of a digital camera is its number of megapixels. The more megapixels, the crisper the images, the sharper the color

Flash Memory
Memory cards with higher memory hold more pictures. If you want to transfer images from a memory card (such as Secure Digital or CompactFlash), you can also purchase a Memory Card Reader, which reads memory cards and plugs directly into your computer. Depending on the type of memory you have, there are readers for each type (Secure Digital, etc.).

Scanner
A scanner lets you to convert existing photos into digital images and then load them into your computer for easy photo-editing. Scanners typically hook directly into your computer through a USB cable.

Printer
When it comes to printing photos, a high megapixel resolution on your digital camera won't mean much if you don't have a good printer. If you invest in a digital camera, it's also a good idea to invest in a photo printer. Photo printers deliver prints with truer, richer colors (by using more inks than conventional inkjet printers). They also print directly from removable digital memory cards and print borderless photos.

To make sure you don't run out of ink right in the middle of a project, don't forget to stock up on printing cartridges.

Photographic Paper
When printing digital images, the regular paper in your printing tray won't do. You'll need photo-quality paper with either a matte or glossy finish. The matte paper minimizes ink absorption to produce sharper images and brighter color than ordinary paper. Glossy paper maximizes color saturation for rich prints and enhances the visual impact of graphics, presentation and reports.

Image-Editing and Desktop Publishing Software
Image-editing software lets you retouch, repair, and edit photos. Some programs will also help you photos on such sites as Club Photo, iClips, and the Kodak PictureCenter. Desktop publishing software will help you create and design your own flyers, brochures, newsletters, and other commercial-quality publications or layouts using your digital images.

Digital Camera Accessories
Once you're outfitted and using your new digital camera, you might want to buy a new bag or carrying case, or a few extra batteries, for travel. You might also discover that you want add-on zoom or telephoto lenses, or perhaps even different flash capabilities. If you're looking to upgrade your camera's memory so you can store and carry more images, you can explore affordable memory upgrade options.
