Tooth Fairy, D.D.S.

Five Halloweens ago, my son Jake lost his first tooth. I remember it was Halloween, because we were in costume at a Halloween party when the tooth fell out, and everyone at the party called him "Jake-o-Lantern" all night. He was so excited the next morning to wake up and find that the Tooth Fairy had visited.
Now that my kids are 13 and 11, visits with the dentist and the orthodontist are fairly common, but the Tooth Fairy hasn't flown in for a visit for a couple of years now. Back when my kids were still losing their baby teeth, our Tooth Fairy used to leave two dollars. Sometimes, as a special treat, she would also leave a note written in teeny-tiny letters, signed "T.F." (Short for her name, Tina Frances — not "Tooth Fairy," as you might imagine.)
I was reminded of all this just the other day, when a friend of mine who has younger kids mentioned that her children's Tooth Fairy leaves books and educational toys. I silently wondered if her kids were sounder sleepers than mine had been. Our Tooth Fairy had a hard enough time slipping a couple of bills and a note under the pillow without waking the kids, never mind a whole toy.
I also wondered if this Tooth Fairy might not be encroaching a bit on Santa's territory.
Tooth Fairy styles aside, the creative offerings my friend mentioned — combined with all of my family's trips to the dentist and orthodontist —did get me thinking. If Tooth Fairies could bring notes, books, and toys, maybe they could bring trinkets that would help teach kids about good dental hygiene, too.
My kids are too old for this idea — but my sister's boys are 5 and 3. Right now, they still have all their baby teeth, but within a year or two, I'll bet the Tooth Fairy will be making her first visit of many to their house. In the meantime, I'm gathering ideas for some dentist-approved trinkets she might leave.
So far, here's what's on my list:
I think this pro-dental health idea might just catch on. In fact, if you asked them, I'd bet four out of five Tooth Fairies would recommend it.

Tooth Fairy, D.D.S.
I like your ideas.. I have so much tooth fairy trouble it isn't funny (for my kids anyway). I don't know what it is but I just can't seem to remember to take the tooth and leave the money. In our house our children have actually spent the next morning looking in their beds for their money with me by their side. (Even though I know it isn't there because I didn't leave it!) I suggested they leave a note for her that tells her where the tooth is so she can find it. They have since needed to write notes and have made maps. Luckily, I haven't forgotten to leave money 2 days in a row, yet. My youngest still has all of her teeth, but I fully expect when she starts to loose them my oldest advises her from the get go, to leave a note/map for the tooth fairy that first night. Hmm, maybe next time I will suggest they leave the note on the bathroom mirror. I heard a rumor the tooth fairy checks the bathroom for the tooth first. Has any one else heard that? :)

I have an idea for something the tooth fairy could leave, even though my youngest is almost finished losing his baby-teeth. I have noticed both boys brushing longer since we found the Tooth-Tunes toothbrushes. There are several songs to choose from for boys and girls, and the better they brush, the better the song sounds!

We don't do tooth fairy, Santa Claus or Easter bunny anymore. We used to, but as our faith has grown we found those things to be too worldly for our family. We first "told" the children the Santa Claus myth, and the rest just sort of happened. When they loose a tooth we just give the $1 (and so does each set of Grandparents). I would say they each make out pretty well. This also arose as we don't believe in "an allowance" so it has served as a money management teaching tool. As far as gifts we are a large family on a small budget, so lots of gifts are out. We usually give them (could be a handmade thing) each one thing they need for birthdays. At Christmas we give them each one med. priced gift and we draw names and get one gift (med. priced again) for the person we draw.

GIFT GIVING HASN'T GOTTEN OUT OF CONTROL,
I THINK SOME PARENTS HAVE GOTTEN OUT OF CONTROL WITH TRYING TO GIVE THEIR CHILDREN EVERYTHING.I HAVE 3 KIDS ALL PAST THE TOOTH FAIRY STAGE AND WE DID THE 50 CENT PER TOOTH JUST LIKE MY PARENTS DID WITH ME. GRANTED I DID CATCH OUR TWINS ONE DAY TRYING TO PULL THE OTHER'S TOOTH SO THEY COULD FIND MORE SURPRISES UNDER THEIR PILLOWS.
THE DOCTOR SAID IT WAS JUST THE TWO BRAINS WORKING TOGETHER AS ONE, OKAY ANYONE WHO BELIEVES THAT RAISE YOUR HAND. I BELIEVE THE KIDS THEY JUST WANTED MORE SURPRISES. LITTLE DID WE KNOW THEY HAD PLENTY MORE IN STORE FOR US. HAHA

Well our daughter is 6 1/2 and has lost 8 teeth. It seems like it's been 2 and 3 at a time. It's always an exciting time in our household. So exciting that she has decided to be the tooth fairy for Halloween. We are creating a costume from her description of what she thinks the tooth fairy looks like along with a few of moms suggestions. And she wants to be a dentist when she grows up since her dentist makes it a pleasant and fun experience for the kids. But it sure helps when she doesn't want to brush her teeth. I just tell her that Dr. Neil will be sad to hear that she's not following good dental hygiene.

It doesn't matter what the Tooth Fairy leaves your child as long as it is a token of your love. When your child is old enough to know the truth about the Tooth Fairy, those gifts will be a small reminder of a parent's love that the child will only appreciate more as they get older, and especially when they have children of their own. :)

If any of you fight the battle as I do to just get your kids to brush thier teeth each day without a fight, I just thought of a great TF thing to do to encourage them, collect thoes tiny desk calendars (the TF couldn't carry much larger) and the tiny stickers and have them mark off the days they remember ALL the brushings until the next TF visit and leave that with the next lost tooth, or for a 'monthly' check in from the TF for an extra little treat.

My grandson recently lost two teeth. Being a first timer, he was advised of the tooth fairy etc. Within a matter of days we had to bring our dog to the vet for teeth cleaning and the strong possibility of multiple extractions due to gum disease. Well, he had eleven teeth extracted (he is fine now). When we told our grandson to be carefull around the dog's mouth because of him having 11 teeth pulled, our grandson immediately had this look of a lottery winner, saying, 11 teeth, he's gonna be rich.!

When my son lost his first tooth it was an exciting day for all of us. Since he is the oldest, his lost tooth would bring the TF to our house for the first time. He excitedly listed off all the different $ amounts his friends had received for their first tooth. The $ amounts ranged from a few $s to $20! We knew the TF that visited our house would not be leaving $20 for our son although he was sure he would get that much if not more. I sat my son down & explained how the system worked. There is a TF team with millions of TFs responsible for ensuring not a lost tooth is missed. Each TF has different yrs of experience & each has a different budget. Thus the amount of $ he received for his tooth really depended on which tooth fairy was assigned to him & what her budget was. My son listened very intently throughout the whole conversation. Now 4 lost teeth later, we have yet to have a disappointed morning whether a $, $5s, or $10 (for the 2 teeth he had to have pulled) is left by the TF.

Tooth Fairies, Easter bunnies even Santa himself will remain special to me. They brought so many joyful daydreams and pleasant thoughts.
I found comfort to know that I was just as loved by these "Host of Happiness" as any other kid. Today I still keep the secret & I get to share the love. I have given everyone of my four children a brand new $5 dollar bill, that I mark with 4 lil red hearts on each side, I fold into a fan and tie shiney, curled ribbons around it & put it under their pillow. I give the extra frills because I try to celebrate my children and our love in everyway I can, I give $5 because when I used to get a quarter, I just candy. I would rather them have the money so we can take a trip to the toy store and they can buy a small gift. It may be just a tooth but their memories of the love I give them will be with them always.
