"You're going to make their costumes?" asked my husband, not even bothering to hide his surprise. Then, without missing a beat (and deftly stepping out of striking distance), he added, "So will you be fixing my pants, too?" referring to the time I promised to sew a button on a pair of khaki pants when we were newlyweds. Ten years ago.
"These are no-sew costumes!" I said, not bothering to hide my defensiveness.
At 7, our oldest son wasn't too cool or easily bored to indulge his little brothers by watching their TV shows, including Pingu, the lovable claymation penguin featured on PBS's "Kids Sprout." I humored him by not sharing this fact with his school friends.
"Can we be Pingu for Halloween, Mom?" asked Jackson. When I showed him FamilyFun's penguin costume, he requested a few tweaks — behavior typical of this first-born child. "We have to make the feet and beak orange, like Pingu's."
One trip to the craft store netted most of the supplies — enough sheets of orange, white, and black craft foam to make three costumes, black fuzzy fabric for the wings, and double-sided foam tape. I found black sweats and hoodies and skipped the costume's bow ties, since that's not how Pingu rolls.
When it came time to cut out and assemble the costumes, Jackson helped cut the foam shapes for the wings, feet, and eyes using the template.
It didn't take long 'til we ran into trouble: the double-sided tape didn't stick. I began picturing the boys dropping body parts around our Victorian town square like penguin zombies.
Then I remembered that my mom, perhaps hoping to pass on her crafty aptitude, had given me a gift a few birthdays back that I could finally use. Like a desperate action-flick heroine, I dug into a dusty box hidden in the basement and recovered my weapon: a pink plastic glue gun. Only one glue stick of ammo remained, so after dashing the boys' hopes of using the super-hot glue gun, I quickly glued eyes and beaks onto the hoodies.
The results would've made any claymation penguin proud.

Hi, Quiverfullof5, and thanks for commenting. I think what matters most in situations like these is knowing what you and your family want and not worrying about what others say (especially if they're rude). If people disapprove, it's about *them,* not you.
ladybee723: I love your ideas! That Lego one is brilliant! And I'd never have thought of a scuba diver, so creative. Thanks for sharing these; I'll bet they'll inspire many other parents.

About 6 yrs ago we stopped celebrating Oct 31 altogether our participation had been sporadic prior to that as we had babies in the house & it seemed someone was always ill & plans would be cancelled. We were on the line whether we should celebrate or not anyway. God seems to always get His way. A couple yrs ago we moved into neighborhood w/ lots of children. Since moving to this area each year we have posted a little sign with a blessing for safety of those out and, that we don't participate. The parents passing by don't all take kindly to this, most are fine I think. The 1st yr here my hubby was in our garage doing some work and overheard some unkind remarks. Since it is not always practical to just not be home, how do you who do participate think we could kindly show the neighbors that we don't & not compromise our beliefs?

My youngest has been a lego (cost about $1.50) total and he was sooo cute and original.
I also made him a chicken costume (almost no sew) that one was about $10.00-15.00 he wore that for 2 years. This year he is going as a scuba diver total cost under $8.00.
The costumes are easy ones to make. I start well in advance of halloween so I am sure to have lots of time to do it and make sure it is done.
The lego took a total of 45 min. this includes drying/harding time for glue and spray paint. The Chicken took longer total time 2 hours(or less) the scuba diver bought the mask kit at the end of the summer season he will be wearing dark sweatpants and a turtleneck that he already has. I just "painted" the inside of two 2 liter soda pop bottles for his air tanks. I already had old paint around the house just poured some in swirled it around let it dry did it again and agin until inside was covered.
