Janet Malloy, my mother in-law had this picture taken of her and Santa in 1948. She recently scanned the picture and had it submitted by a friend to the Pittburgh Post Gazette.
On that day in 1948, her mother dressed her up and took her to downtown Pittsburgh to the former Kaufmann's department store and waited in line for over an hour.
After getting to the front of the line, it's obvious that she decided that she wanted to be home and no where near that scary Santa Clause. Her mother said, most likely with some choice words added, "I've waited here over an hour with you!". After that her mother picked her up, put her on Santa's lap and said "Take the picture!".
