Scared of Santa

This picture was taken in 1984. Melanie was 9, Bryan was 5, and Brandon was 3. Everything was picture perfect all day long until Santa went to put Brandon on his lap. That is when Brandon became a ââ¬Åweeââ¬ï¿½ bit upset. The picture shows it all; a pants-wetting, screaming 3 year old who wanted nothing to do with jolly Santa that year. Through all the screaming and wetting, his sister and brother are doing everything they can to hold back their laughter so Santa will think they were just angels all year long.

Tell Your Christmas Story

When my children were young it was a family tradition that we travel the 90 miles from Virginia Beach to Richmond, Virginia to visit the legendary Miller and Rhoads Santa. It was a major part of our Christmas year after year.

We would leave early in the morning and arrive in Richmond just in time for lunch with Santa. Lunch was spectacular. It was in the tea room and until Santa arrived an organist would play seasonal music. The room was decorated to the hilt with decorations. It was a magical start to our holiday season every year.

When it was time for Santa to arrive he would be accompanied with his Snow Queen and favorite elf. The lunch would begin with Santa telling the children the importance of drinking their milk all while giving a demonstrations on how to drink it to the last drop. Santa would eat his lunch in the front of tea room at a banquet table with his Snow Queen and Elf. When his meal was complete he would then come down to a table filled with ââ¬ÅReindeerââ¬ï¿½ cake and personally pass a piece of cake out to each child in attendance.

When the meal was over Santa would then thank the children for being good an invite them all up to the eighth floor to visit with him. We would then all leave the tea room and get in line for a visit with Santa. That room was also decorated for Christmas. There was a fireplace all decked out for the holidays and next to it a beautiful tree and the most spectacular chair anyone could have seen.

Suddenly the room was filled with the sound of bells and Santaââ¬â¢s boots would suddenly be dangling in the fireplace. Then boom, down Santa would come and enter the room from the fireplace. Santa would address the children, talking to them about the previous year and giving them advise on how to behave in the new year to come. Now it was time for each group of children to go up and visit with their hero.

As the children approached the front of the line, Santaââ¬â¢s Snow Queen would call them up to her, speak to them briefly, and then direct them over to Santa. Year after year, it would even amaze the parents how Santa could remember the name of each child. When it was my childrenââ¬â¢s turn he would say, ââ¬Åhello Melanie, Bryan, and Brandon come up and talk to Santaââ¬ï¿½. Even as the children became too old to visit Santa, they loved the magic of it all.

Well, that is with one exception and this is the picture of that exception. This picture was taken in 1984. Melanie was 9, Bryan was 5, and Brandon was 3. Everything was picture perfect all day long until Santa went to put Brandon on his lap. That is when Brandon became a ââ¬Åweeââ¬ï¿½ bit upset.
