The day after Christmas, a thick fog settled over us despite the temperatures being below freezing. Not even the decorations were left untouched by the icy fingers of Mother Nature.

Tell Your Christmas Story

For the first time in 6 years, I was home for the entire Christmas season. Usually, college or other endeavors have kept me away from my home until the days right before the Big Day.

This year, I was home to pick out the tree, put the lights up and decorate our house. And every year, I add another sleigh bell to our collection of festive dressings.

My mother has always loved the "Polar Express" book and I took a special love of the idea of a sleigh bell expressing belief. So I purchase the bells to remind us all of the hope, faith and belief in the spirit of Christmas.

Walking out to see this bell covered in icy crystals was a poignant reminder to me of all that I have been fortunate to experience with my family and of all the things that I have to look forward to. I had to stop for a long moment to just absorb the moment, look around and see the winterscape that was laid before me.

All season long, I had been harboring the impression that the spirit of Christmas is dead, that the love and passion that embraced us as a nation was somehow absent. This one moment, this lone bell singing its song despite the bitter elements reminded me to believe.
