Little Orphan Annie Costume
My daughter really wanted to be Annie for Halloween, so... We found a red holiday dress, added a wide white ribbon that I edged with black ribbon to the waist and sleeves. The hardest part was find an Annie-style wig (my daughter has very long, brown hair) - finally found a Napoleon Dynamite wig that fit the bill best. After that, we added some freckles, and.. Voila! There was Annie. She was a hit both at school and around the neighborhood! We can definitely say we didn't run into another Little Orphan Annie last year.
Prep Time: After shopping, about 1 hr.
Costume Materials- Red holiday-style dress
- Black Mary Jane style shoes
- White dress socks
- White ribbon at least 1.5 inches wide (enough to go around waist and sleeves of dress)
- Black ribbon very thin (same amount as white ribbon)
- White thread
- Annie-style wig
- "Best Friend"-style locket (one of those 1/2 heart things)
- Stitch black ribbon to both edges (lengthwise) of the white ribbon. Measure waist and sleeves of red dress. Cut ribbon into pieces 1/2" longer than your measurements.
- Since our dress zipped in the back, I folded under 1/4" of each edge of the white ribbon cut for the waist and sticthed them to form a clean edge. I loosely handstitched the ribbon to the waist, leaving the zipper opening. (I stitched loosely so the ribbon could be easily removed after Halloween and the dress worn for the Holidays.)
- Fold under 1/4" of one end of each sleeve's ribbon to provide a clean edge. Stitch the ends together to form cuff by placing clean edge over other end, overlapping by 1/4". Similar to the waist ribbon, I then loosely handstitched the ribbon to the sleeves.
- When ready to go trick-or-treating, wear the modified dress, socks, shoes, put on wig, and dot on some freckles (if you/your child has none) with brown eyeliner - then have fun.
