Costume Materials
two 18" cardboard boxes, smaller cardboard boxes for candy drawer and fortune holder (optional), misc. cardboard to reinforce corners or edges as needed, battery operated lights (clear and red globes), round globe for a ceiling light fixture, clear plastic gift basket wrap, tape, hot glue, little bit of white paint and a black marker.
Costume Instructions
Fold the top only of the first box so that it is closed. Hot glue flaps together. Using an exacto knife, cut half of the top off the box...this is where the "fortune teller" will stand, and the remaining top will be the "fortune teller" table. Place clear battery operated lights inside the globe, and secure to the table.....uncut half of the box top. Be sure to leave the on/off switch on the outside of the globe by securing it to the box top with tape. Now take the second box...do not fold in either end. Slide one open end over the top of the first box, and overlap approximately 10 to 12 inches. Hot glue boxes together. Use an exacto knife to cut out the three windows....leaving about a three inch border of cardboard around the outside of the box. Cover each of the windows from the inside, by securely taping the clear plastic into each one. Use a pencil or other sharp object to poke holes through the cardboard around the front window of the costume. Remove the red globe bulbs from the strand of lights. From the inside of the box, push one socket through each of the holes you just made and reinsert the bulb from the outside....the wire will be on the inside....bulb on the outside. Additional cardboard pieces may be added to inside of corners to make the structure more stable, or to add a "fortune teller" name to the top. a drop box can also be added by hot gluing a box to the inside and cutting a hole on the bottom box to give access for treaters to drop candy into it. To distribute fortunes, print various fortunes onto small slips of paper. Cut a slit, not too big, but big enough to slide the papers through....level with the "fortune tellers" table top, and on the front of the costume. To walk around, the "fortune teller" places hands under the table and lifts the costume off the ground.
