Most Unique Halloween Costumes

Jayden's costume is a jockey. She is the pilot of her barrel racing horse, Shotgun, who is also dressed for Halloween as "Stripes", the racing Zebra. Jayden's costume begins at the top with a blue satin jockey hat, complete with yellow pom-pom and goggles. Her blue and yellow jockey silk was highlighted by our family's brand on the left yoke of the shirt and also on the back. Her riding pants were converted from football pants and tucked into black knee-high boots. The blue "toppers" on her boots were also made from "recycled" materials...some old socks that we cut to fit the top of her boots. The costume was a big family collaberation. The hat was made by Jayden's great-aunt, Caryl. Caryl also made the saddle blanket and the hood for Shotgun. Jayden's shirt was made by her grandma and the pants were some I picked up at a yard sale. Jayden and Shotgun competed in a costume contest, but did not win. The most important thing is that this Halloween is a memorable one for Jayden.

Costume Instructions

Prep Time: 4 hours sewing time

Costume Materials
For Jayden's costume we used approximately 1 1/2 yards of blue satin and yellow satin material. The hat and shirt were made using patterns bought at a local craft store. We used yellow yarn to complete the hat's pom-pom. The brands on the shirt were made using yellow fabric that we traced the brand onto and then ironed on the shirt. We used fusable web to attach the two fabrics. The goggles were bought at a sporting goods store. The pants for the costume were boys' football pants that were tucked into a pair of Jayden's black boots.

Costume Instructions
Jayden's costume was relatively easy to do. The hat and shirt were both patterns that can be purchased at local crafting or fabric stores. Follow the manufacturers instructions for cutting and sewing the hat and shirt patterns. The pom-pom on the hat was made by looping the yarn over and over and snipping the loops open. The easy part of her costume was from the waist down. The football pants were purchased at a yard sale, but were a little big for Jayden. I solved the problem by adding two darts in the back, taking the waist up by an inch or so. The blue tops on her boots were made from the elastic tops of a pair of my old socks. I cut them down and tucked them into her boots and folded the excess down over the tops of her boots. The quirt was bought at animal supply store.
