Costume Instructions
Prep Time: approximately 10 hours
Costume Materials
1 cheap off the rack alien costume with cape and mask
3/4" x 1"" lumber long enough for arms, sholders and back of alien - 6 pieces total
1 set of pjs and socks
2 prs of alien gloves (find at any local dept. store)
paint for alien face (optional)
black thread/needle
sewing machine (optional)
clear nail polish (optional)
screws for alien arms
screwdriver
several bags of fiber fill (the kind for pillows) for alien body/head and to stuff the pj bottoms
2 yards of black fabric
1 over the head invisible hooded mask for alien head (local dept store sells them)
sticky back velcro
safety pins
1 belt
Costume Instructions
First make sure you have your materials. You may need to do some measuring of your child before you buy your lumber. Pj's for child should be the right size for the child. Have the child wear jeans or pants with belt loops. Start with the alien's head/mask. I chose to paint the alien mask to give it a less generic look. I used cheap acrylic paint. I painted the eyes of the mask with clear nail polish to make them bright and shiny. Next I stuffed the invisible hood/mask to shape the head. Then I attached the mask to the inside lip of the stuffed head using sticky back velcro. Next, cut a piece of wood that is long enough to hold the alien head up over the childs head. We let the wood rest in the seat of the child's jeans or the back pocket.. Mark the wood where the child's waist is and fasten a belt to the wood with a nail or screw. This goes thru the child's belt loops to hold the alien in place. After you have that done measure a section of wood to make the shoulders. Screw in place. You will then need to screw on the arms. use 2 pieces of wood for each arm ., making sure they are long enough to reach under the fake pj legs. The arms should be able to bend at the elbow but be tight enough to stay in place. After you have that done, Insert the wood of the back up into the alien's stuffed head. Use as much stuffing as you need to make it look real. Put the alien costume (body) over it all and put stuffing up inside to costume to fill it out and then sew the costume shut. The black cape covers all of this. Next I sewed two pieces of the black fabric to make the sleeves. Be sure to measure the arms first so they are long enough. Attach sleeves over wooden arms with sticky velcro, stuff arms as desired. Next I painted all four alien looking gloves (optional - I like to jazz it up to make it look more realistic) Next hand sew the gloves to the alien's arms. The other 2 gloves attach to the child's shoes using sticky back velcro. Next sew the socks to the pj bottoms and stuff with fiber fill. You will need to take a piece of the black fabric and make a black skirt to cover the front of the child's legs. Just sew a seam at the top and cut a thin piece to thread thru so that it can tie in the back. Now you are ready... Have the child dress in pj top and jeans. put his shoes on and stick on the alien feet with the sticky back velcro. Attach the alien by the spine into the seat of the child's jeans or the back pocket works just as well. Belt him on thru the belt loops - next tuck the pj bottoms into the front of the child's jeans. Tie the black skirt on. You can use safety pins or velcro to keep it closed in back. Note ; have the child hold onto the fake pj legs while assembling alien, arrange alien arms so one arm holds up fake legs. Arrange other arm in front of child's chest. Safety pin alien hand to child's pjs. Lastly, tie black cape around alien's neck and you are done! A costume any kid would be proud of!!!
