Most Unique Halloween Costumes

A year ago our 6 year old son decided he wanted to be a monster with many eyeballs sticking out of it's head. We thought long and hard on how to do this. Grandma and Grandpa found a container of 50 gummi candy eyeballs. An Aunt gave us a white fleece throw with fringed edges. Finally we had some materials to create and play with.

Costume Instructions
Create a custom paper mache mask that fits your child's face, forehead and top of head. Incorporate the eleven eyes into the surface of the mask all over the head. We removed the outer wrapper of the eyes but kept the clear plastic liner on the surface of the eyes.

Take 3 eyeballs with clear liner and wrap with maksing tape so it looks like skin and eyelids around the eyes. Make 3 wire coil springs by wrapping thick wire around a pencil. Attach eyes and insert wire into the mask through a hole and tape the end of the wire under the mask with masking tape.

Paint the mask with acrylic paint. Use some light colors in some areas. when dry, go over the lighter colors with glow in the dark paint. Sew in some elastic sewing tape in an upside down T shape in the back of the mask. One strip goes around the back of the head over the ears and the other goes from top of the mask to the center of the head where the elastic is.

Take the fringed fleece throw and cut off a strip about 12 inches wide to make a hood. To make the hood, fold it in half lengthwise and sew partway down the back of the hood and then a little bit under the chin to your collarbone. You will then have a hood with the fringed long edges slightly draping over your shoulders.

To make the cloak, fold the large piece of the blanket in half lengthwise and cut out a slit for the head to fit through. Put the cloak over the child's head to measure where blanket drapes over the wrists. Sew a short seam on both sides just under where the hands will be.

We painted the cloak with large stipes in many colors and painted dots all over the hood.

String together 10 eyeballs by putting small holes in the ends of the plastic liner on each end of the eye tying they with fishing line. Add some stretchy cord to go around neck and under the hood.

We added 3 squares of peel and stick velcro to secure the mask to the hood.

We also added some foam padding to make the mask more comfortable to wear. We used double sided tape.

Use double sided tape to attach fake fingernails to the gloves
